Superfoods are rich in nutrients, carry a range of health benefits and, most importantly, taste great in a delicious healthy smoothie. Here are some of the best superfoods to add to your favourite detox drink.

Avocado

A versatile superfood like avocado can be blended into a nutritious smoothie for breakfast, mashed and smothered on toast at lunch or chopped into salads at dinner. Avocados are high in monounsaturated fats which helps to lower cholesterol and contributes to a healthy heart. The fruit also contains many nutrients including high levels of potassium which has been shown to regulate blood pressure. They also work in conjunction with other foods such as spinach and carrots to absorb nutrients which help fight cancer.

Maqui berries

Their slightly bitter taste may not be to everyone’s liking but Maqui berries contain high levels of antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins. These compounds protect the body against the toxic effects of pollutants making them the ideal addition to your smoothie. They have also been shown to contribute to cardiovascular health. Blueberries are also high in antioxidants if you would prefer a sweeter alternative for your smoothie. They are thought to have anti-aging effects and may contribute to lowering blood pressure.

Quinoa

These edible seeds contain a high level of antioxidants as well as iron, phosphorus, Vitamin B and Vitamin E. Quinoa is also a gluten-free grain making it ideal for Celiac sufferers. Its high protein content makes it a recommended food for any balanced diet. Take care and do some research before mixing your healthy smoothie to ensure that you reap the full health benefits. There are some ingredient combinations which may not be as beneficial as they seem.

Kefir

Kefir is typically a mixture of milk combined with nutritional kefir grains to create a drink providing a range of health benefits. Although the milk mixture has been shown to be tolerated by those with lactose allergies, kefir grains can also be mixed with coconut milk for extra flavour. It is a rich source of calcium, Vitamin B12 and riboflavin and has been shown to have cancer-fighting properties. Kefir can also be made using coconut water and it still contains the fantastic health benefits and offers the refreshing coconut flavour.

A delicious smoothie packed with superfoods should be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. These superfoods and many others can be added to your meals too or enjoyed as a delicious snack.
